SMTI is developing a TDHP (Thermally-Driven Heat Pump) product version suitable for multi-family building usage. SMTI, partnering with a major OEM serving this sector, commissioned a 140,000 BTU output capacity TDHP in September, 2019 to serve both the space-heating and hot water loads of all the units in the building near Chicago. SMTI’s approach to application engineering typically utilizes existing building boilers, rendering them into a relatively small “peaker” role, while the TDHP serves the majority of the “base” load. The project will collect data and experiment with various control strategies to optimize performance and energy savings as a key step in product development for this market sector.
