Stone Mountain Technologies, Inc. (SMTI), an innovator in high-efficiency gas absorption heat pumps, is proud to celebrate its remarkable growth.
Founded in 2008 by Michael Garrabrant, SMTI evolved from a vision to revolutionize residential and commercial heating solutions. Garrabrant, who previously held key engineering roles at American Water Heater Company and A.O. Smith Water Products Company, recognized the need for more efficient and environmentally friendly heating technologies that didn’t impact the grid.
Over the years, SMTI has focused on developing its flagship product line, the Anesi® brand of gas-fired absorption heat pumps. These innovative systems utilize patented compressor-less technology and operate without harmful refrigerants, achieving an impressive Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating of 140%. This breakthrough technology significantly reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions, making it an ideal solution for a wide range of heating needs.
In 2022, SMTI unveiled its gas absorption heat pump system at the AHR Exposition in Las Vegas. This milestone marked the beginning of SMTI’s journey towards commercialization.
The company’s persistence and innovation paid off in 2023 when SMTI announced a $13.9 million investment to establish manufacturing operations in Piney Flats, Tennessee. This expansion created new jobs and solidified SMTI’s position in the advanced energy economy. “We were excited to launch the manufacturing and engineering of our Anesi brand of very high-efficiency heat pumps and water heaters for residential and commercial buildings,” said Michael Garrabrant, CEO of SMTI.
Currently, SMTI is commercialized, employs more than 50 people, and has achieved internal production and shipping milestones. SMTI’s commitment to excellence and sustainability has garnered significant attention and support, including but not limited to the U.S. Department of Energy, GTI Energy, NGIF Industry Grants, Utilization Technology Development (UTD), National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), North American Gas Heat Pump Collaborative (NAGHPC), Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA), Tennessee Advanced Energy Business Council (TAEBC), and the Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation (TDEC). Additionally, SMTI has partnered with manufacturing representatives across North America to ensure the widespread distribution of its products. These partnerships have been instrumental in advancing SMTI’s technology and bringing it to market.
An Anesi system was installed in the cafeteria and administration building at King University in Bristol, Tennessee, as part of an initiative to reduce gas consumption for water heating. This project will provide essential data and findings to continue innovations in decarbonizing commercial water heating operations.

As SMTI continues to innovate and expand, it remains dedicated to providing customers with high-comfort, cost-effective, and low-carbon heating solutions. The company’s journey from a startup to a key player in the heating technology industry is a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence and sustainability.
